Creative Writing

During Writers' Workshop we have been working a lot on adding sensory details to our writing.  We have done lots of fun hands-on activities to spark our brains and inspire our use of  descriptive language. 

Observe the image.  Let the image inspire you to write a descriptive paragraph or a short story with lots of interesting  language.  Challenge yourself to write it all!!!  Touch, Sound, Smell, Sight, and Taste!

Read your Caribbean Integrated Reader pages 63 -68  for at least thirty minutes. Find five new vocabulary words in your book and define them using context clues.  
Explain in a brief paragraph how you used the clues to define the words.

Consumers and Producers

    Producers 
Plants are called producers. This is because they produce their own food! They do this by using light energy from the sun, carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil to produce food - in the form of glucose/sugar. The process is called photosynthesis.
     Consumers
Animals are called consumers. This is because they cannot make their own food, so they need to consume (eat) plants and/or animals.
There are 3 groups of consumers:
Herbivores: these are animals that eat mainly plants. These include leaves, flowers, bark of trees,grass, seeds and roots. Some herbivores are: goat, cow, sheep, deer, bees, grasshoppers and horse.
Carnivores: these are animals that eat other animals (meat) as food. Some carnivores are: lion, tiger,owl, hawk, frogs, spiders and sharks.
Omnivores: these are animals that consume both plant and animals. Some omnivores are: humans, birds, bear and monkeys.

Food Chains

  Every living plant and animal must have energy to survive. Plants depend on the soil, water and the sun for energy. Animals also depend on plants as well as other animals for energy. In an ecosystem, plants and animals all depend on each other to live.Scientists sometimes describe this dependence using a food chain or a food web. In a food chain, the plants are called the PRODUCERS. They are at the beginning of the food chain. The animals in a food chain are called the CONSUMERS, they get their food by consuming plants and the other animals. A food chain describes how different organisms eat each other, starting out with a plant and ending with an animal. For example, you could write the food chain for a frog like this:

                     grass         grasshopper               frog

The frog eats the grasshopper, which eats the grass. Here is another example in picture form:

   Food Webs:
      Food webs show how plants and animals are interconnected by different paths. For example:Because there are mice and rabbits snakes have food. The insects and the fruits attract birds, skunk and opossums. With the skunks, opossum, mice and rabbits around, hawks,foxes and owls can find food. They are all connected! Like a spider's web if one part is removed, it can affect the whole web. A food web shows how plants and animals are connected in many ways to help them all to survive. Unlike food webs, food chains follow one path of energy as animals find food.

   Name the carnivore in the food chain
   Which animal in the food chain is a predator?
 (Which animal in the food chain is the primary consumer?
   Which animal in the food chain is the Secondary consumer?
